“They treated me like I was part of the family.”
This is exactly how Sabrina Dominguez described her treatment for brain cancer from MD Anderson. “The nurses and doctors love their jobs. You can tell because they know every patient personally – what they like and how best to speak with them. Like for me, they would talk a little tougher because they knew I could take it. Others, they were more gentle.”
Only 16 at the time, Sabrina came to us with medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer that not only required surgery, but her treatment also included proton therapy, an advanced method to target cancer to sub-millimeter precision. The beauty of this meant less chance of damaging healthy tissue nearby. In Sabrina’s words: “Thank God I’m able to have this form of radiation at the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center. I know this will have fewer side effects.”
An eloquent writer and blogger, Sabrina often speaks to her time at MD Anderson and the cancer treatment she went through. “I’m thankful to the people who have helped save my life, but I’m also thankful for my brain tumor. It’s part of who I am now. And I love sharing what I’ve been through to try and help someone else."
