"My body learned how to beat you, cancer."
Philip Prichard | Cancer Survivor | Clinical TrialsClinical trials are crucial to us at MD Anderson. In fact, at any given time there are hundreds of trials being conducted. We’re testing treatments, therapies and theories on the most common cancers as well as the rare ones. In doing so, we continue to expand our huge database of information, sharing it with others within our network of specialists, all in the hopes of finding that cure that will put cancer away for good.

Dr. Padmanee Sharma | Cancer Physician & Scientist | ImmunotherapyImagine the body using its own natural defenses to fight cancer. Now imagine a team of highly educated, highly motivated medical experts putting all their efforts into making this a model of cancer therapy for years to come. That’s the reality we are working on at MD Anderson. Immunotherapy, also called biotherapy or biological response modifiers, works on white blood cells, stimulating them in various ways to boost the body’s immune system and fight the invading cancer. Yet another innovative treatment working wonders for our patients.

Dr. Karen Lu | Cancer Physician & Researcher | Genetic TherapyGenetic Therapy is a treatment in which researchers at MD Anderson use healthy genes within someone’s body to help treat or even prevent cancer. They do this in one of several ways – it can be in the form of replacing a diseased gene with a healthy one, taking out the mutated gene altogether or introducing a new gene to help fight the cancer. All with the same goal: get rid of the cancer.

Yvonne Cosgrove | Cancer Prevention Patient | Genetic TestingDid you know that about five to ten percent of cancers are inherited? This simply means that mutations in specific genes are passed from one blood relative to another. However, anyone who inherits one of these genes is at a greater risk of developing cancer. Because these people are predisposed to developing cancer, MD Anderson is at the forefront of figuring out how to prevent such an event from happening and is stringently at work developing tests for these cancers as well as counseling for patients.

Holden Rushing | FundraiserWhen Holden’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, both father and son decided to get a second opinion at MD Anderson Cancer Center. “We liked that MD Anderson had a completely different approach. They provided options.” Today, father Tom is doing well while Holden serves on the Board of Visitors to help advance our mission. Holden speaks often on the need for more research, more cancer-fighting drugs. “Given the resources”, says Holden, “MD Anderson can solve anything.”

Dr. Sapna Patel | Cancer Physician & ResearcherDr. Patel has always been fascinated with skin. “I always liked the skin. So it seems natural for me to be fighting melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer and one of the most aggressive types of cancer out there.” When Dr. Patel began, there were hardly any effective therapies for advanced melanoma. Even chemotherapy was not effective for the type of rare melanoma Dr. Patel treated: Melanoma of the eye.

Dr. Steven Frank | Cancer Physician | Proton TherapyOne of the benefits of Proton Therapy can be summed up in two words: incredible accuracy. Gail Morse | Cancer Survivor | PreventionCancer is preventable. Many times easily so. It can be a matter of simply making better and healthier choices, and adapting to a healthier lifestyle. It can also mean regular screenings for people with certain risks. At MD Anderson, we’ve introduced numerous programs over the years to help screen for cancers, as well as plans to help people prevent cancer in the first place. Or at least, help reduce their risk.
